Scissors Keep / Saksen perät

I finished this old cross stitch ufo yesterday. I bought the stitch-it-yourself pack from Edinburgh some five years ago with the tiny stork scissors. The scissors are are very sharp and thus perfect for for binding off.

Eilen sain viimein lopetettua yhden vanhan ristipistoufon. Ostin työn tee-se-itse pakettina Edinburghsta noin viisi vuotta sitten pienten haikarasaksien kanssa. Sakset ovat hyvin terävät ja siten täydelliset lankojen päättelyyn.

Socks from Gusset / Sukat kärjestä

These may look like there are three designs in one pair of socks, but I am so proud of them and myself. This is my first ever gusset starting pair of socks. They also are my first pair with hour class heels. And on top of this I managed to finish three left-over skeins of yarn with them. Now I feel like the L’Oreal add: I’m proud to be me.

Nämä saattavat näyttää siltä kuin yksissä sukissa olisi kolme mallia, mutta olen niin ylpeä niistä ja itsestäni. Kuvissa on elämäni ensimmäiset kärjestä alkavat sukkani. Näissä on myös elämäni ensimmäiset tiimalasikantapäät. Ja kaiken huipuksi, onnistuin lopettamaan kolme jämäkerää näiden kanssa. Nyt tuntuu ihan L’Oreal mainokselta: Koska olen sen (sukkieni) arvoinen.

Colours of Flora / Kasvikunnan värit

Galaxy’s Knithikier proudly presents: The new bright colours of her sister’s plant dye trial yarns.

Linnunradan neuloja ylpeänä esittää: Uudet kirkkaat värit siskonsa kasvivärikokeilulangoissa.

 All his was produced by a gentle touch of washing detergent and a good rinse.

Kaiken tämän sai aikaan pesujauheen hellä kosketus ja kunnon huuhtelu.

 To appropriately celebrate the achievement, the Sleeping Beauty of this household was woken up from a long sleep to help the Knithiker to skein the yarn.

Juhliaksemme saavutusta asiaan kuuluvin menoin, talouden pitkään nukkunut prinessa Ruusunen herätettiin neulojan avuksi.

Post Scriptum: Does anybody know the English name for the skeining thing in the last picture? I have absolutely no idea, and therefore named it the Sleeping Beauty. It refers to the thingie’s age and time when it was last used.

PS: Tietääkö kukaan englanninkielistä nimeä sirkan säärille? Itse en varmasti ole koskaan kuullut sitä ja siksi nimesin sen prinsessa Ruususeksi, joka kuvaa säärien ikää ja viime kertaa kun se on ollut meillä käytössä.

I Washed a Miracle / Pesin Ihmeen

As the plant dyed yarns felt a bit rough, I decided to give them a wash. That produced a miracle. All yarns changed coulours. The pale yellow turned bright, three greens stayed green and all the rest are brown now. I called my sis and asked her how this was possible and her response was that she may have not rinsed the yarns ever. New colours gave new ideas and I am starting to see them as a knit.

Koska kasvivärjätyt langat tuntuivat hieman karkeilta,  päätin pestä ne. Se tuotti ihmeen. Kaikki langat vaihtoivat väriä. Vaalen keltaisesta tuli kirkasta, kolme vihreää vyyhtiä pysyivät vihreinä ja loput ovat nyt ruskeita. Soitin siskolleni ja kysyin miten tämä on mahdollista ja hänen vastauksensa oli, että hän ei ehkä koskaan huuhdellut lankoja värjäyksen jälkeen. Uudet värit toivat uuden ideat ja alan nähdä langat neuleena.

Plant Dye Trials / Kasvivärjäyskokeiluja

Many years ago my sis had a kg of yarn. She wanted to see what kind of colours she can create from plants, vegies and leaves. She divided her kg of wool into small portions and this is what we have had for ages now. There is 50 – 110 grams of each colour. Yarn is handspun (not by me), thin, 2-ply, 100 % woll to be knitted with needles no 2. I would like to use it for something, but cannot imagine what that could be. I already tried to do a lacy scarf, but it did not look nice. Yarn is somehow to coarse for that. Colours in the picture are quite accurate. Very earthy colours.

Monta vuotta sitten siskollani oli kilo luonnollisen väristä villalankaa. Hän halusi kokeilla millaisia erilaisia värejä hän onnistuu luomaan kasveilla, kasviksilla ja lehdillä. Sisko jakoi lankakilonsa pieniin osiin ja tässä on hänen kokeilujensa tulos. Ollut kaapissa jo vuosia. Lankaa on 50 – 110 grammaa kutakin väriä. Se on käsin kehrättyä (ei minun kehräämääni), ohutta kaksisäikestä 100 % villaa, jota kutoisin kakkosen puikoilla. Haluaisin neuloa langasta jotain, mutta en keksi mitä se voisi olla. Yritin jo pitsineuleista hartiahuivia, mutta se ei näyttänyt hyvältä. Lanka on siihen jotenkin liian karkeaa. Lankojen värit kuvassa ovat aika lähellä oikeaa. Värit ovat hyvin maanläheisiä.

Cardie-in-process / Villuri valmistumassa

The texture of the near future cardie looks like this. Yarn is Novita’s old, out-of-maket, tweed yarn named Fauna.

Pian valmiin villurin pinta näyttää tältä. Lanka on Novitan jo myynnistä poistunut tweed lanka nimeltään Fauna.

Needles are no 4. The double pointed needles in the picture are there waiting for me to start casting for the sleeves.

Kuvassa olevat nelosen sukkapuikot odottavat hihojen alkusilmukoiden luontia.

Thus far I have the fronts and the back ready. They were knitted flat in rib. The holes are for sleeves.

Tähän mennessä olen saanut taka- ja etukappaleet valmiiksi. Ne tehtiin tasona ja joustinneuleena. Reijät ovat hihoille.

Here is the one piece that consists all above mentioned three pieces. The two skeins on top of the knits is all the yarn I have left. One skein left for each sleeve. I am worried.

Tässä kappale, joka sisältää kaikki yllä mainitut kolme kappaletta. Kaksi kerää neuletyön päällä on jäljellä oleva lanka kokonaisuudessaan. Yksi kerä per hiha. Huolestuttaa.

To take my mind off from the upcoming sleeve problem, I started to do gusset starting socks. I have never done such socks before and was happy to learn that it was easy.

Siirtääkseni ajatukseni pois edessä olevasta hihaongelmasta, aloin tekemään kärjestä alkavat sukat. En ole koskaan aikaisemmin tehnyt sellaisia sukkia ja olin tyytyväinen oppiessani, että niiden tekeminen on helppoa.

A Little Rouge / Pieni punainen

The infamous cardie is still my main work-in-process-thing, but I need to do these small side things beside to keep me going. The hat in the pic is yet another BB hat made with Laura’s instructions. Woll is pure left-over. Needles no 3.

Kuuluisa villuri on edelleen päätyöni, mutta tarvitsen näitä pieniä sivuprojekteja motivaation ylläpitämiseksi. Pipo kuvassa on jälleen yksi Lauran ohjeilla tehty BB pipo. Lankana puhdas jämävilla kolmosen puikoilla.

How to Cook a Little Side Dish / Keitetään lisuke

1.)

1.) A friend invited me over to see a new baby. As a good guest, I wanted to bring something with me and turned to the family yarn stock. I wanted to so something blueish as the new born is a boy, but all our blues were in navy and royal. There was only a small ball of Huopanen in right shade. I decided to use that for a pair of felted soles and then build nice small socks to be attached to those. Unfortunately, the ball was way too small even for the soles of smallest socks. Had to do the soles from a tiny, small ball of unknown yellow. Nice.

1.) Ystävä kutsui katsomaan uutta vauvaansa. Hyvänä vieraana halusin vierailulle tuomisien kanssa ja lähdin etsimään inspiraatiota lankavarastosta. Halusin tehdä jotain sinistä, koska uusi vauva on poika, mutta kaikki jämäsiniset ovat laivastoa tai kuninkaallista sävyä. Ei hyvä. Onneksi löysin pienen kerän jämän vaaleamman sinistä Huopasta ja päätin käyttää sen huovutettujen tossun pohjien tekemiseen ja rakentaa pienet sukat niiden päälle. Valitettavasti, pieni sininen kerä oli liian pieni jopa pieniin pohjiin, joten kantapäät jouduin tekemään tuntemattomasta keltaisesta.

Yllä olevassa kuvassa pohjat ennen houvutusta Addin kuutosen puikkojen kanssa mittakaavan hahmoittamiseksi.

4.) The third shrinking trial is called sole soup. In this point I am starting to need a shrink myself. The soles come out from the soup exactly in the same size they went in and the cook gives up.

5.) Then the baby sock fairy steps in and finishes the thing. They won’t turn out as a baby sock at all, but as a little boy’s boots. Knitted and felted. And those boots walked happily ever after.

Beads / Helmiä

Yesterday I opened  my old bead box and got carried away. I have not done this for many years and do not plan to start again. I just wanted to empty the box and clear some shelf space. These five were made of old left-over, what-ever beads and therefore, I am not totally happy with them. However, I am sure, I’ll be able to wear them somewhere.

The green and glass necklace in the front were made of green beads I fell in love with in London’s Neal Street’s Bead Shop many years ago. Unfortunately, at that time I fell in love with many other beads too and did not have enough money to get enough lovely greens. Therefore, I had to combine them with small clear beads to make the necklace. I do not like the glass ones that much.

The uneven brown class bead necklace is my favourite and I believe I shall wear it often.

The black one consist of five strings of everything I had in black and gold. OK, but not exactly my style.

Pearl beads are real fakes. I got them many years ago from my great aunt. I do not wear pearls that much, but if I did, I would wear this.

The last necklace is the most interesting, because there is a story to the beads. I got them from the same great aunt who gave me the fake pearls. They are real amber with rose motif engraved on the surface. She got them from her late husband some 60 years ago, because she suffered from goitre. Back then it was believed that amber can cure it. Later the necklace fell apart and she lost some beads and therefore, I had to add some small golden beads to make it a long enough necklace.

Auntie’s goitre was eventually operated in a hospital.

Eilen avasin taas pitkästä aikaa helmirasiani ja jäin sen pauloihin. En ole tehnyt helmiä vuosiin, enkä aio aloittaa sitä uudelleen, mutta tein nämä viisi helminauhaa siivotakseni laatikon ja vapauttaakseni hyllytilaa. Korut eivät ole aivan täydellisesti mieleisiäni, koska tein ne niistä helmistä mitä minulla sattui olemaan. Tulen ehkä joskus käyttämään niitä kaikkia.

Vihreistä ja lasinvärisistä helmistä tehty nauha edessä on ehkä vähiten tyyliäni. Hullaannuin noista vihreistä helmistä vuosia sitten Lontoon Neal Streetin helmikaupassa ja pidän niiden väristä edelleen, mutta valitettavasti en silloin ostanut niitä tarpeeksi kokonaiseen koruun. Ihastuin silloin näet niin moniin muihinkin helmiin, että rahat loppuivat kesken. Jouduin lisäämään koruun lasinvärisiä pikkuhelmiä saadakseni siitä tarpeeksi pitkän ja juuri noista lasinvärisistä en niin perusta.

Erikokoisista ruskeista lasihelmistä tehty koru on näistä mieleisin ja sitä tulen varmasti pitämään useimmin.

Mustassa korussa on viisi nauhaa yhdessä ja sen tein kaikista mustista ja kultaisista helmistä mitä laatikosta löytyi. Ihan OK, mutta ei ihan minun tyyliäni.

Aidot feikkihelmi helmet sain vuosia sitten isotädiltäni. En juurikaan käytä helmiä, mutta jos käyttäisin niin käyttäisin juuri tällaisia.

Taaimmaisena olevat helmet ovat kaikkein kiinnostavimmat, koska niihin liittyy tarina. Sain aidot ruusukuviokaiverretut meripihkahelmet samalta isotädiltä, joka antoi minulle nuo helmi-helmet. Isotäti oli saanut ne noin 60 vuotta sitten aviomieheltään, koska hänellä oli struma. Silloin uskottiin että sen pystyy parantamaan meripihkalla. Myöhemmin helmistä katkesi lanka ja tätini hukkasi muutaman helmen ja siksi minun täytyi lisätä pikkuhelmiä saadakseni aikaan riittävän pitkä nauha.

Tädin struma hoidettiin lopulta sairaalassa leikkaamalla.
